The story begins with a normal, bumbling everyday watchdog beagle named Shoeshine who gets exposed to a substance that gives him the powers of a superhero. And not to mention the ability the speak during an accident. He is adopted by a security guard - an ex-cop, who&#39;s a widower with a 12-year-old moody son, Jack Unger. Shoeshine uses his superpower to protect his love and the citizens of Capitol City from the evil Simon Barsinister. Underdog dedicates himself to good, quickly becoming revereda superhero, but ultimately it will take the combined efforts and understanding of Underdog, Jack, Dan, Molly, and Polly to defeat Barsinister and save Capital City from destruction. Occasionally, a film&#39;s trailer gives viewers a realistic preview. Such was the case with &quot;Underdog&quot;. Here is a film with humor offered without the condescension and knowing winks delivered by Dreamworks Animation and its ilk. The story is a typical zap-the-hero setup and does not pretend to be otherwise.<br/><br/>The actors (human and animal alike) deliver professional performances. Peter Dinklage is deliciousthe requisite mad scientist. James Belushi is surprisingly effective and believablethe dad. Unfortunately, Patrick Warburton has descended from acceptably quirky into shtick. Newcomer Alex Neuberger (in his second feature) gives his part a nice emotional balance and doesn&#39;t overplay his sidekick work.<br/><br/>The animal animation is nicely handled and devoid of gimmickry. This part of the movie industry deserves praise for continued development and polish.<br/><br/>Summers have blockbusters created by and viewed by blocks; Underdog reminds audiences that a simple, fun flick can be far more entertaining. . . . . . . . . . . . . All I know is I took my four-year-old son to see this movie, and he got so caught up into it that he didn&#39;t even touch his popcorn or candy until it was halfway over ~ it was that good! This film had everything ~ talking dogs, flying dogs, flying, talking, fighting dogs. IT&#39;S GREAT! Also, the underlying story is well acted and designed to make an impression ~ it kept MY attention. Jim Belushi is always well worth watching. And, the dog&#39;s voice was perfect… very endearing. If your kid has ever made a mistake that he&#39;s felt bad about (like my kid did when he accidentally tripped the fire alarm in a hotel), in other words, any kid will relate to this dog and the storyline.<br/><br/>Usually, my kid will make it through about 3/4 of a movie at best before he&#39;s ready to go home, and, the second the credits flash he&#39;s jumping out of his seat and running for the door. But, with this movie, he was still sitting in his seat and looking up at the screenthe credits rolled. As a parent, I&#39;ve gotta tell you, that&#39;s the best recommendation ever. He LOVED this movie; he&#39;s still talking about it. And, he wants to go back and see it again. I&#39;m really glad I took my child to see this film! You&#39;ll be glad you took your kids, too! Director Frederik Du Chau's big-screen Underdog has all of the cartoons' crudeness and none of their charm. It's the celluloid equivalent of sugar cereal: cheap, empty and headache-inducing.
